during the run up to our 3 week break, several topics of interest started to emerge.
Les is interested in web sites/hosting/development and started a web page design session. Dave started to set up a Drupal site. Colin is interested in Tiny core, how linux works and command line stuff. Several have mentioned an interest in command line, scripting and/or programming.
We might struggle to fit in all the different topics in just two hours a week.
But then, we don't actually need to be at the meeting to get things done, Linux is after all a world wide collaboration.
I have set up a drupal site for you to play with:- http://pcrecycler.byethost33.com/
How Linux works: Linux from scratch has an excellent manual here:- http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/stable/ I have worked part way through this (built the required toolchain.)
Minix is a mini unix initially designed as a teaching aid, the wiki is here:- http://wiki.minix3.org/en/WikiGuide I have this running in Qemu, and it looks like Linux from years ago.
Programming There are numerous excellent articles on programming, just google for your preferred language. O'reilly have made one of my favorite books available online, writing Linux device drivers:- http://www.xml.com/ldd/chapter/book/ and there are many others.
I have been doing some digging around looking for a way to get started with 'ARM' processors. Progress so far is here:- http://atomicarm.blogspot.com/
Hope this helps to keep the ball rolling, see you next week.

Meetings - looking for projects
Well it was a slightly quieter meeting today just Mike, Colin and myself. We had a look at Ubuntu 10.04 beta 1 which unfortunately would not run in Live mode on the PC we used ( It might be a bug as I haven't tried it on my Core 2 Duo as yet) we also looked at the new Lubuntu beta 1 the first official community release of Ubuntu with the LXDE GUI looked good but crashed a couple of times in live mode, I may try installing them both in Virtual; Box to have a proper look and see if these are still issues.
We then had a look at Colin's aging Think Pad laptop with a view to installing one of the very small distro's but we were again up against the God's as the CD drive would not allow it to boot from CD despite finally working out how to get into the strange bios set up and setting it up to boot from CD.
The rest of the session was discussing Linux from Scratch and the possibility of creating our own distro, Mike did point out that this was a big undertaking and without a programming background quite a difficult task.
Thanks to Colin for the Coffee and Les in his absence for the chocolate :-)
Well that will be it for a while as there is no meeting for the next 2 weeks and possibly 3 due to other commitments and the Easter break.

Meeting - 6 attending, 3 sessions
Today we hit the dizzying height of 6 members!
Dave, Colin, Tony, Mike, Les and a new face, Rick. Welcome Rick.
There was lots of activity today, with 3 sessions being run.
Everyone took a look at an Acer Aspire Revo that Rick had kindly brought to the LUG. These are fantastic bits of kit and a can handle 1080p HD video with ease, all for under £200! Wow.
Then we split into 3 sessions.
Tony, Rick and Les took a look at Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Alpha 3 running on the Acer Aspire Revo.
This Alpha version does not have the new Ubuntu branding, that comes with the Beta (released on the 18th March 2010).
The communication applications (Empathy, Evolution and Gwibber) are all part of the panel by default, similar to 9.10.
From what we could see (at this time) there is not much difference between 10.04 and 9.10, but I am sure the Beta will change this.
Everything ran really well with the Acer, and we played with Wine and installed Spotify
Mike and Dave worked on creating a website using Drupal (I wouldn't mind taking a look at that myself ;) )
Colin and Mike got to work on Colin's netbook and printer. For some reason CUPS wouldn't set up Colin's printer. After some tinkering, and alot of hardwork, a printed page was produced! Woohoo!
Les, and Rick also talked about Android phones and apps (we both have Android phones)
Well it has been as busy day...
But a final newsflash...from the top bod at Crunchbang Linux Here
Ubuntu and a new Crunchbang in the same month, I am a lucky so and so.
See you all next week.

The focus of todays session was my presentation on the basics of web design.

I explained the basics of web design using the Kompozer application

The session went well, with lots of questions and answers.
Looking forward to running a further session in the future, building on our basic knowledge and introducing CSS and new HTML tags? Perhaps we could create our own site to consolidate our knowledge?
Dave and Mike also looked at blogging using the Blogger platform provided by Google. (May I also suggest the wordpress platform? Wordpress.)
We also looked at audio editing, using Audacity.
The BBC's new creative vision for their website Here
Cheese Webcam Booth Here.
